A special tool for the manufacture of parts for a hydraulic pump on a heavy plant vehicle lifting device was required by a component supplier.

Notwithstanding fairly sizeable dimensions, there was still a need to ensure that the part was machined to relatively narrow tolerances (to ensure maximum efficiency of operation).

In this instance, one of the main challenges was to work out how to machine the tool as safely and efficiently as possible. Rigibore®’s proprietary RADS™ software was here crucial in fulfilling not one, but two roles.

Firstly, of course, the shape of the final tool design could be calculated in detail. But because the software also generates full NC instructions for the shop floor, what it also allows engineers to calculate are step-by-step manufacturing procedures.

Because RADS links directly into an industry-standard CAM system, it is possible to run a full machining simulation of any given tool before any metal is cut. Crucially, this enables engineers to modify NC instructions in the event of any manufacturing conflicts arising before they are sent to the shop floor.

This means the tool is manufactured quicker, more accurately and significantly more efficiently than would be the case within a traditional set-up. It also means it is delivered sooner to the end-user. Productivity is enhanced for both Rigibore and the customer.
